What Starts the Downswing in a Golf Swing

What starts the downswing in a golf swing is from the golfer doing nothing at all. Nothing starts the downswing. What starts the downswing in a golf swing is a reaction to coil or to a reaction from falls and counter falls from a wide upright backswing, like Bubba Watson. The important thing here is these golfers are not trying to do anything to start their downswing nor or they trying to achieve a look or meet some obligation or requirement. However, with golf shows and golf tips found within magazines, it seems to be trending to start the downswing by deliberately working the left knee towards the target. Many are including an importance of having the weight on the left side at impact demanding a shift so to achieve this all in the name of power.

Let’s take a closer look at the downswing. So many things occur naturally in the golf swing and require no involvement from the golfer for them to happen. Having the left knee separate from the right towards the target represents one such unnecessary involvement. Here is how this can happen automatically: The feet control the knees. Pigeon toe the feet in and then lower down. The knees will automatically work in. Flare the toes out and lower down the knees will bow out. This means that if the golfer has both feet flared out at address the knees will automatically separate out at the start of the downswing. Now the weight will stay longer on the right side making it easier for the body to turn through the shot, a result of an increased inward pulling or centrifugal forces all of which leads to longer shots. This is not unlike taking a string and weight and spinning it up. If it is to be spun faster one inwardly pulls just like an ice skater pulling the arms in to achieve a faster rotation. With this principal the body turns through more easily and it is this turning motion that leads to a weight transfer. This is how gofers have this look of leg separation. They are not trying to bow the legs or keep the weight back and they are definitely not trying to make the left knee work towards the target or shift the weight. It is a result setup with the desired foot flare.
