Golf Swing Tempo

Golf swing tempo. As golfers we can all appreciate the effortless unhurried power found in the swings of an Ernie Els or a Phil Mickelson. How do these golfers acquire this perfect tempo even when hitting a 300 yard drive? The answer is that they swing the club and they swing it at their natural tempo. This is good news because if this is the case, what they are doing is incredible easy to do quite simple and requires absolutely no effort on the part of the golfer to do it.

Let’s start by going to the dictionary and looking at the definition of the word Swing. Here it defines the word swing as: unrestricted uninterrupted continuous backward and forward motion.

Now comes the easy part. The only part of the body in position to swing the club are the arms and since they are attached to the shoulders they will swing very nicely on the line of the shoulders. When one swings the club with the arms like this the legs will naturally and automatically coordinate. Swing your arms slowly and the legs will probably move slowly. Move your arms faster and the legs will respond by moving faster. Clearly, as seen in all the other sports, the arms control the legs; however, this also means that we don’t want to slow the backswing down, unless you want to hit the ball a very short distance. And if make the motion slow to fast as so many are lead to believe the body will now have to stop so as to support this acceleration.  A second thing this tells us is that we do not want to control the motion, start the motion or be obseSo the next time you see Phil Mickelson swing the club back and through maybe 5 or 6 times without stopping he is simplifying the motion by getting his arms and legs to coordinate. Tempo!ssed with turning the shoulders. As soon as start with shoulder turn we have abandoned arm swing and without arm swing the arms and legs will not coordinate nor will the clubface open naturally from right arm fold in the backswing. However with arm swing the shoulders will be pulled back, everything will arrive at the top at the same time and the legs will readily coordinate with the arms.
