The World of Long Driving

The long drive championship was hosted by eight incredibly athletic finalists, each one capable of hitting drives upwards of four hundred yards or more. Looking at these swings one can see some rather obvious similarities. The first is that most of them are truly beasts or at least slightly different. Not only are they large and or powerful individuals but all used drivers measuring 48 inches, the maximum allowed creating a wide swing base and prodigiously long drives.

All had very strong grips especially with the left hand. This makes since as it gives one more clubface control and allows for use of the legs and hips. However Joe Miller, the linebacker of a golfer, had very much an upper body dominated motion and with slow hips was seen to jump as he delivered  his release to the ball. Here is a golfer who uses vertical forces when hitting a ball.

The next observation is that most of these players were delivering the club on the shoulder plane, not the shaft or right arm plane. Again this makes sense as a forearm that is longer than the upper arm is also a longer lever which equates to more clubhead speed. Also the delivery system for a shoulder planer is higher than the hips for the shaft planer or torso for the right arm planer. Well many of these competitors are very much upper body oriented AKA as beasts.

With loft depending on clubhead speed 4 degrees was typical for these drivers. In a matched set of clubs all hit the ball the same height. A wedge hits the ball short and therefore higher to match a driver that hits the ball longer and needs less loft so as to achieve the same height. This means that if you are going to hit the ball 400 yards you will not need much loft. This is described as the optimal launch angle.

A finale observation, all of these players possess incredible core strength allowing for a very long and fact golf swing. All golfers have a time IQ with their golf swing as it is a hard wired program and takes a set amount of time. This means that if one swings back and through slowly, the swing will shorted so as to satisfy this time requirement. Swing back faster and the swing naturally lengthens to satisfy one’s time IQ which also requires more core strength to support the motion. There is an upper limit to this process dictated by one’s core strength. Well Most of these guys are swinging very fast and very long exhibiting incredible core strength.

A look at the winner, Jeff Flagg. There are not enough accolades for this golf swing. In fact I believe he could be one of the few long drive champions that could actually take his swing to the golf course and be able to hit other clubs such as a wedge or seven iron.
