Seeing the putt and reading the putt are not the same thing.

I have been saying for years that a putter can only hit a flat straight putt but what we see depends on the individual.  Here, let me explain…

All of us know the need for reading putts but this read is based of off either seeing a line or a curve. The greats refer to it  as linear or non-linear putters. I overheard in the opening round at the Dubai Classic Tiger Woods say to his caddie “there is no such thing as a straight put”. His caddie replied that “every putt is a straight putt”. And so this is a perfect example of how everything can be right and everything can also be wrong as it all depends. But the question is how is it possible that they can both be right and at the same time wrong?

Tiger does not see a line when he putts. Nor does he does start his putt on a line allowing the ball to break off a point or apex. Instead he sees a complete roll out of the ball with curves and breaks, all the way to the hole from start to finish. It seems to work quite well for him. This is referred to as a “nonlinear putter”.

Others see the ball starting on a line and then breaking off of this starting line at an apex or point. These are referred to as “linear putters”. With them lines are wonderful things: lines on the ball, lines on the putter head, logos lined up before the putt. They live in a world of lines.

But this same line adversely affects the nonlinear putter. For them a putt is a gestalt experience of curves and breaks to the point that a straight putt is a curve with no breaks in it, and is one type of putt in an infinite number of putts, thus the remark:” there are no straight putt”.

Embrace the curves or the line, whichever one works best for you and that way you can be the best you can be.
